Worsley Mine Development Project Receives State Approval

South32 Limited (ASX / LSE / JSE: S32; ADR: SOUHY) is pleased to announce that the Western Australian Minister for Environment has granted approval for the Worsley Mine Development Project. This approval marks a significant milestone following an extensive environmental assessment, consultation, and review process that began in 2019.

Project Overview:

  • The Worsley Mine Development Project will ensure continued access to bauxite resources, sustaining production at Worsley Alumina, one of the largest alumina refineries globally.
  • This project will help maintain Worsley Alumina’s competitive position in the global alumina sector and support its significant role in the South West of Western Australia, where it is a major employer, providing jobs for thousands of workers and contractors.

Key Highlights:

  • Alumina Production: The supply of alumina from Worsley is a critical component in the production of aluminium, a key commodity for the global energy transition.
  • Environmental Certification: Worsley Alumina recently received certifications against the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, highlighting its commitment to responsible production and adherence to global sustainability standards.
  • Ministerial Approval: The conditions of the approval reflect a positive outcome, especially when compared to the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) assessment published in July 2024.

Next Steps:

  • With State approval now secured, the process moves forward to Federal approval. South32 expects to receive Federal approval for the project in early 2025.

This approval enables Worsley Alumina to continue contributing to the regional economy and the global aluminium supply chain while adhering to high environmental and sustainability standards.
